32 Years Later, Still Believing In Miracles

February 22, 2012

B1G, MN, WI

Do you believe in miracles? Damn right you do.

It was 32 years ago today that a bunch of Big Ten kids (and a couple of guys from Boston U) beat the greatest hockey team in the world.

To that point, it was the best day in my 9-year-old life.

Here are the Big Ten players from that team:

Minnesota: Mike Ramsey, Rob McClanahan, Bill Baker, Neal Broten, Steve Christoff, Steve Janaszak, Buzz Schneider, Eric Strobel, Phil Verchota, coach Herb Brooks.

Wisconsin: Mark Johnson, Bob Suter.

Jim Craig was my favorite player from the 1980 Olympic team (I played goalie at the time, and he gave me an autographed stick for my birthday nine months after this game was played).

Among position players, Rob McClanahan was my favorite. Not sure why.

Love it. Every time I watch either clips of this game, or the entire 3rd period, it makes me feel great about America and amateur athletics. It’s always funny to me that a vast majority of people think this was the gold medal game too. Almost as impressive to me is that Brooks kept that team from letting down after beating Mother Russia, and they handled Finland in the final game for the Gold.

That Herbie Brooks BTN ‘Icons’ is absolutely outstanding. Wished it was a full hour. I’ve watched it like 6 times now.
