It seems that most Buckeye fans out there call this season a complete failure since we lost our last 3 games, particularly the one to Michigan. I look at this season from a different light that I would like Buckeyes to contemplate.
Even though we ended the regular season 6-6, there was still plenty of good. First, Braxton Miller’s maturity progression through the season actually reminded me of Troy Smith. Yes, he still had bad plays, but watching him make better decisions with the lack of support from his coaching staff simply intrigued me. Next, the experience for the young wide receiver corps. Our recievers still dropped plenty of passes but with game experience, there was less of that later in the season. It seemed that once they started getting the feel, they started making great plays. Finally, I’ll finish off the good with Ryan Shazier. As a freshman, he showed unlimited potential (even with playing most of the Michigan game injured and still making great plays). I am extremely excited to see him suit up again next year and put some hurtin’ to some quarterbacks and running backs.
The record, 6-6, is offensive to some fans. After so much success, here we are at .500. Fans were/are outraged, but did you honestly expect more from an interim coach and the multiple suspensions? Also bad was Braxton Miller’s accuracy at times. It is not his fault though. He is a product of the system. The coaches very rarely let him get in game experience by “letting him loose” until the Michigan game, and he had a GREAT game. Finally, Joe Bauserman, who originally was tOSU’s starting quarterback until his horrible outing early. Joe, you are a Buckeye, but football is just not your sport brother.
The ugliest thing that happened this year was the scandal (as a whole). Included in that scandal was numerous suspensions, distractions and media biased bashing. Some sports writers have their day made when something negative comes out of tOSU. A lot of the time, they will hear a rumor and run with it. Or, they will twist a story to make it look worse than it really is. It disgusts me, I won’t mention any names or networks, but it can get pretty bad. Next, the fan base was an ugly sight this year. Obviously, there were going to be upset/outraged fans with all the NCAA reports but I’ve seen fans stoop so low as to criticize PSU for what had happened. I do believe some people didn’t do enough, but we have our own problems and that is a sick thing to even mention. Finally, to end the ugliness would be the coaching/play-calling. Fickell does a great job with the defense, but it is clear he is not ready to be a head coach anywhere yet. Time outs that were not called, or called at a horrible time were his biggest struggle that I had noticed. Bollman, on the other hand, had the WORST play-calling all season. How do you expect a young quarterback to get better at throwing in games, if you dont let him throw?
With all that said, I can say that I am pleased with the outcome of the season. The bad and the ugly can be fixed, actually some of it is fixed already. The good gives us Buckeye fans a great sense of what is to come in our near future. Remember, nothing can be done about the past, always look to the future and the future of these Buckeyes is VERY bright!
